Adrift in Soho asks the question - Which is more intrusive - the camera lens or the naked eye watching? Pablo Behrens takes the British Beat Generation novel by Colin Wilson and creates a visual abstract journey going pretty much nowhere.
Disjointed scenes and snapshots are strung together in an endless stream by a couple of 20something Millennials, faking a sense of kool ennui and hipster one-liners. Like any facet of independent filmmaking, the viewer will experience this film exactly as it should be - as long as they don’t take it too seriously.
Would Adrift in Soho make more sense if it just dropped the self-congratulatory dialogue and let the music and the camera do the talking? Sure, but then again the Beat Generation had a language that spoke to a select audience, and Pablo Behrens may be one of the anointed few that really connects with its uncompromising perspective.
